Blippy – A Blessing or a Curse in our Consumerist Culture

What is Blippy? It is a private firm who takes social media into new territory. If you thought all the new was mined out then you have another thing coming because I think we are just starting to get into the new realms of weird. This is a site that tracks what you buy and posts that information for all to see.

It allows people to keep track of what your spending your money or credit on at any given time. It has just went through a round of financing by venture capitalists and some angels with a source on tech crunch putting the site’s value at $50 million. (That is OMFG type valuation for me but I am glad I was not the only one who thought so.)

What do you think of a site whose sole purpose is to track what you have spent and what will happen at Christmas. Do you want to know what you might be getting for Christmas from your sister and their on Blippy. Now it’s easy to narrow down the list of choices. In our consumption driven society this is a service, site and idea that makes sense and I can see future spin moves that say that this site will keep shoppers more honest and others to keep an eye out in case their shopping gets out of hand.

Not sure how I feel about this one but I want it to see what happens. If it does well I could see it being a target of acquisition. If it gets to a critical mass the data on your specific purchases in combination with other data would be a treasure trove for many depending on the demographic.

This is a service for women since they do so much shopping, at least that’s what I expect. So is it a blessing or a curse? The jury will be out for awhile on that one but now that we have Blippy, Foursquare, Twitter and Facebook what comes next is the next million dollar question? Let us know what you think in the comments section.
