In the wake of Google TV’s recent announcement the rumour mill has just come full circle with an impending reluanch of Apple TV. Oh wait you haven’t heard of Apple TV that is probably because very few people took the plunge the first time around with it. Instead it became a hobby but not a massive success the way the iPod and iPhone had.
The price is rumoured to be $99 and if it is they have priced it to move. It will run on the iPhone OS with few if any ports and only 16 GB of flash storage. The current Apple TV runs a version of OSX and comes with a 160 GB hard drive. Other rumours suggest that it will be all about the streaming based on the cloud.
Is this their response to Google TV, has the frenemy relationship turned to a full scale war and is the cloud mature enough for this type of task. Did Apple TV finally grow up? Who is to say but it is great to see all this competition out there as the living room experience takes the next step in its evolution.
I feel like Apple is taking the body of Apple TV and pulling off a resurrection of the platform of sorts, I just need Jobs to yell #Rise, Rise” but that seems more zombie like, although I expect the faithful to think of it more of a Christ style resurrection with harps and everything.
