Sony + Intel + Google = Google TV? (They conquered the web and our living rooms are next)

Recent reports reveal that Google in partnership with Intel and Sony will be announcing their Smart TV platform this month. The Financial Times reported on Sunday that execs from Silicon Valley have said they are ready to reveal a deal with Sony that would bring the web to its TV’s either built in or as a box for existing televisions.

The same article says the hardware would run Intel’s Atom processors and the OS would be based on Google’s Android platform. It is their shot at combining consumer electronics, broadcast TV and web in a single device. With this they can bring the web experience into the forefront of the home opening it up and offering new ways to connect and interact with content.

This is as much about content providers as it is hardware and software companies. Intel’s latest Atom processors offer better performance than the competition. We are about to see an explosion of such devices coming on the market and Paul Otellini the Chief Executive of Intel told analysts that “this will be the biggest single change in television since it went colour.”

This is about who will control the digital living room as much as it is about the content that will come from it. What will make or break this type of product is the user experience, how easy is it to use and understand for everyone.

I have so many questions but I hope that my next TV will also be a computer that connects me online from the couch, if so I welcome the next revolution in media.

This is the start of the next generation of the Internet and Television, the beginning of their merger, the question is are you ready because it is on it’s way with Google, Intel and Sony at the forefront.
